Power of the Tongue

Do you realize how much power your tongue packs? Do you realize how powerful your thoughts are? It is so important that we begin to speak life over ourselves, our situations, and others. How much better would we all be if we began to uplift one another, speak positively over ourselves, and think positively? How does it feel when someone speaks nicely to you or encourage you?

I recently read where the University of Maryland College of Medicine did a study and it showed that women speak an average of 20,000 words per day!! 20,000 words?!?! Well I can believe if I judge myself cause I KNOW I can talk lol. When I read that, I thought: If women spoke that much in a day, what percentage of the words used in a days time is used to build up someone or to speak life over themselves? Then I thought: What about the words that never come out of our mouths. How much of our thoughts are positive thoughts? How often are we thinking negative about ourselves, other people, or even situations that we face?

With that many words used in a day, it is important that we begin to realize the power of our tongues.

Our words have the ability to either uplift or destroy ourselves/one another when we speak. We have to be mindful of our thoughts too. Your thoughts become words and your words become actions. This is why we need to be intentional about speaking life not death!

Ephesians 4:29 (NIV): Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Our words should be of help to each other. It’s so easy to put people down, especially when they make us mad. Your maturity comes when you can still speak life over someone even if they made you angry. How about that? What if you are angry at yourself? How difficult is it to speak life then? Often times when we are angry with ourselves it’s not the word we speak but the words we think. Even then you have to think positively! I’m not a failure. I will make it. I am more than a conqueror. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I am worthy. I am valuable. It’s time to think positively!

We have to learn how to tame our tongue! Here are some things an untamed tongue will produce:
– Gossiping
– Putting Others Down
– Bragging
– Manipulating
– Complaining
– Exaggerating
– Lying

How often are you doing any of the above? Your 20,000 words per day…how many of them are used doing any one of the above list? You cannot tame your tongue by yourself. You have to seek God’s help! Only God can help you with your words and your thoughts before they become words.

I leave you with this out of James 3:3-12:
Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. (‭James‬ ‭3‬:‭5-12‬ NIV)

Think about your 20,000 words per day & how much power they hold. You can choose to use them to speak life or speak death.
